Since childhood, I have been deeply afraid of spiders. I went through a period where I would have very terrifying nightmares involving spiders, which I still have occasionally even as an adult. I decided to do this painting as a way of exposure therapy, by having to repeatedly look at an image of a spider. I thought, perhaps if I tie the idea of spiders with something I love (painting) maybe I won't be as skiddish around them. I chose the black widow largely because of a song I was strongly relating to at the time.
